Rotary Dial

Before cell phones and smartphones came out, people were making phone calls on landlines.

The idea of making phone calls on landlines starts with the rotary phone.

According to Jason Isbell, of Techwalla, “[t]he first use of a dial phone was in 1892 in La Porte, Indiana based on a 1891 patent by Almon Brown Strowger” (Isbell, n.d.).

Also, according to Isbell, “[i]n 1919 the American Bell Telephone Compnay began national service for user controlled rotary dial phones” (Isbell, n.d.).

USB (Universal Serial Bus)

Many of us use our USB ports that are on our computer.

USB stands for Universal Serial Bus.

According to Premium USB, “[t]he first USB technology began development in 1994, co-invented by Ajay Bhatt of Intel and the USB-IF (USB Implementers Forum, Inc.)” (Premium USB, 2019).

We can charge our phones through our laptops and desktop computers (as well as send pictures to our laptops and desktop computers from our phones) using USB. Other devices we can use USB with are scanners, MP3 players, flash drives, an external mouse (that’s a mouse without the USB cord and uses the USB dongle instead), and printers.
